What is Shingles?

A Shingles outbreak is a re-activation of the varicella-zoster virus; the same virus that causes chicken pox. Once a person has had chickenpox the virus lies dormant and can re-active later in life as a shingles outbreak, especially when the immune system is low or under conditions of stress.

Shingles usually passes after a few weeks. It can be very painful, however, with rashes and blisters developing on the skin. Early treatment can help to reduce the pain and discomfort as well as the overall duration of a shingles outbreak.

Rhus tox (30C): Homeopathic remedy well known for its positive effect on conditions involving the skin and joints. It is especially useful for blistering, painful skin eruptions such as those experienced during an outbreak of shingles, chicken pox, herpes, or eczema.
Arsen alb (30C): Very useful for conditions which include restlessness, fatigue, headaches, sensitivity to light, and burning itchy skin complaints.
Urtica urens (30C): Made from a homeopathic preparation of the stinging nettle, this remedy is classically used for stinging, itching, and burning skin, including redness and blistering – making it a perfect homeopathic ingredient in the treatment of shingles.
Mag phos (6C): Also known as the ‘homeopathic aspirin’, it is often used to soothe neuralgic pains and headaches.
Nat mur (6C): One of its many uses is the alleviation of skin conditions such as hives and cold sores. People who respond well to this remedy often have a tendency to suppress their emotions, which then makes them more susceptible to illness.
Apis (6C): A homeopathic potency classically recommended for burning, itching, and swollen skin conditions that are intensely painful and may involve blistering. Apis is also useful when there are headaches, fever, and a sensitivity to touch. People who respond well to Apis may have busy personalities and have a tendency to be irritable under stress. They may also be highly sensitive and have an aversion to being on their own.
